Nwaka Okparaeke
LONDON, UK
Film artist bringing dreamy visuals and a new Afro-surrealist aesthetic
Filmmaker Nwaka Okparaeke is drawn to themes of peace, serenity, love and freedom and how these fundamental elements of life connect every experience. Finding a deeper level to connect and representing unique perspectives is what drives her, resulting in a fantastical and transcendental visual style. Nwaka’s short films include ‘Out Loud’, ‘A New Room’, ‘Plantain = Love’, ‘Lean Back’ each X.
Nwaka’s unique style has resulted in collaborations with fashion brands, magazines and music artists, but she is just getting started;
“I connect Nwaka’s work with a new wave of Afro-Surrealism. She creates utopian worlds using saturated colour, glitter and flowers and shoots through the lens of female Black experience. It feels like her work is transcendental and unique to the British Black experience. She brings hope, it lives on a supernatural plane. For me her work lives in a different realm to other artists depicting the Black experience.”
